After driving for about two hours they arrived at the aged care facility Glenda had told them was Dr Mason’s new home. It was a decent-looking building, newly renovated and with a large parking lot outside. Adam stepped out of the motorhome and asked Nina to follow. She was a nurse, and used to talking to elderly people. If Adam had problems extracting the information he wanted from Dr Mason, her experience could be helpful.

They walked over to the counter and asked to see Dr Mason. Their timing was good, as there was still an hour left of visiting hours. The receptionist called up to Dr Mason’s room, and he willingly accepted the visit when he heard it was an old patient who was there to see him.

Adam had a feeling that Dr Mason wasn’t too different from his own doctor PT clients. They all had stressful jobs and made good money. But what really drove them wasn’t the money. Most of them lived and breathed their work. The responsibility of being the master over other people’s lives, of healing people, of saving people. When one went from such a responsibility to being placed in an aged care home, where most of one’s cohabitants were senile, or at least had minimal conversational value, one would long to relive some of one’s old glory. Adam felt the same after he retired from the army. He had grown to disagree with a lot of the missions he undertook, but he had always treasured the camaraderie, the feeling of belonging.
